Filipino Youth: Then and Now

Youths of diverse generations respond to different situations. They view events and ideas in different perspective making them mistaken by most people. The youths during the Spanish era were reserved and less expressive. The culture before was in favor of carefulness and silent steps while the society now received a more open way of life so, the youths unlocked their thoughts to numerous ways of implementing the freedom of expression.

They have authority issues. Most people who’ve got authority issues would put those in power in pedestal and it will be hard for them to say no to these figures which are the total opposite of what our youth have today – they no longer revere their authority.

They tend to engage in early sexual initiations. With our modern day culture telling them it’s perfectly okay to have sex even before marriage, the youth is misled with their true understanding of sexuality. Because of higher exposure to sex from the internet, magazines, TV shows, movies, modern music and other media, the youth’s curiosity is greatly stimulated. Curiosity plus peer pressure push them to the edge of actually doing “it”.

They are too obsessed. Youths today are too easily obsessed with everything, not only material things like gadgets, make-ups, dresses, etc. but also games (Defense of the Ancient a.k.a. DotA) and TV shows (PBB Teens). They don’t really care much of other stuff. Their primary concern is themselves, their pleasures, what they want, what satisfy them.

These changes that occurred to the behavior of the youth should be received for the reason that these diversions are done in response to the desires of the society. It is not somewhat to be terrified about. As long as they are controllable and their actions are for the profit of the other people, it will be valued and respected.
